What is shingles?
Shingles (also known as herpes zoster) is a viral infection that causes a painful rash, usually affecting one side of the body. It is caused by the same virus that causes chickenpox, which can remain dormant in the body and reactivate later in life.
Early symptoms may include tingling, burning, itching, or pain in an area of skin, followed by the appearance of a rash and blisters a few days later. Shingles can be uncomfortable and, in some cases, lead to complications if not assessed promptly.
How Rose Pharmacy can help
At Rose Pharmacy, trained clinicians can assess symptoms of shingles and determine the most appropriate next steps, in line with NHS Pharmacy First guidance and national clinical standards.
Our approach is assessment-led, ensuring each patient receives safe, appropriate care based on their individual circumstances.
NHS Pharmacy First treatment for shingles
NHS Pharmacy First treatment may be available for eligible patients.
If you meet the NHS eligibility criteria, our clinicians may be able to supply antiviral treatment (aciclovir) under the NHS Pharmacy First service following a consultation.
Treatment for shingles is time-sensitive and is usually most effective when started within the first few days of the rash appearing. Early assessment is therefore important.
Eligibility depends on several clinical factors, including age, how long the rash has been present, symptom severity, and medical history.
If NHS eligibility criteria are not met
If NHS eligibility criteria are not met, our clinicians may still be able to help.
In these situations, we can offer a separate private consultation, where a clinician will assess your condition and discuss the most appropriate next steps. This may include:
-
private prescribing where clinically appropriate, or
-
referral to your GP, urgent care, or hospital services if further assessment is required.
All options, including any costs, are explained clearly so patients can make an informed decision.
When urgent medical care is needed
Some symptoms require urgent medical assessment and are not suitable for Pharmacy First management.
Please seek urgent medical advice if you have:
-
shingles affecting the eye, nose, or face
-
visual symptoms or a red eye
-
pregnancy or suspected pregnancy
-
a weakened immune system
-
severe headache, confusion, facial weakness, or high fever
-
rapidly worsening symptoms or signs of serious infection
In these cases, our team will advise you to contact your GP urgently or attend A&E, depending on the situation.
What happens during a consultation?
During your consultation, a clinician will:
-
assess your symptoms and medical history
-
determine whether NHS Pharmacy First treatment is appropriate
-
provide advice on pain relief and self-care
-
explain whether antiviral treatment, private care, or referral is the safest option
Where NHS treatment is not appropriate, we ensure patients are guided safely and promptly to the right level of care.
